2016-17 LSW Leadership Series facilitated by Dr. Terry from UNT | Dallas. Each session will include a Leadership topic such as Crucial Conversations, Decision Making in Leadership and Ethical Thought to name a few.
Dr. Larry D. Terry II is an Assistant Professor at the University of North Texas at Dallas in the School of Business and Public Leadership. His research interests include public leadership, citizen engagement, and administrative reform in Central and Eastern Europe, and his work has been published in International Journal of Public Administration, Public Administration Review, More than Mayor or Manager: Campaigns to Change Form of Government in America’s Large Cities, and is forthcoming in Local Politics and Mayor Elections in 21st Century America: Keys to City Hall. He is currently working on his first book, entitled Conciliatory Public Leadership: Building Trust between Communities and Institutions. Dr. Terry earned his Ph.D. in Public Affairs from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2007.
His experience in public administration includes both domestic and international service, and began in 1995 as youth sports league referee and later an After School Program Specialist with the City of San Jose, California. In 1999, Dr. Terry served a critical leadership role in the completion a highly controversial skate park project for the City of Santa Barbara, California, as the Project Coordinator within the Parks and Recreation Department. From 2001-2003, he administered federal and state grants in the County of San Diego’s Department of Housing and Community Development, and in the District Attorney’s Office. In 2004, Dr. Terry assisted in the establishment of the Center for Public Administration of Montenegro through a grant funded by the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs; this project included the development of training for state and municipal workers in the Republic of Montenegro and afforded Dr. Terry the opportunity to work with European Union and state level leaders, such as former Prime Minster Igor Luksic. Dr. Terry has remained active in public service at the local level and in 2012 he was appointed by the Brooklyn Borough President’s Office to Community Board 4 in Bushwick, where he served until January 2014. As a member of the board, Dr. Terry worked to expand affordable housing, enhance recreation programs, and served as catalyst in resolving a controversial rezoning project.
Since 2005, Dr. Terry has taught a wide range of courses related to public management, citizen engagement, leadership, and conflict resolution at the University of Texas at Dallas, Arizona State University, and Long Island University, Brooklyn. As a faculty member at the University of North Texas at Dallas, he is currently aiding in the development of the Master of Public Leadership program and has delivered trainings at the Dallas Police Department’s Caruth Police Institute. Dr. Terry, his wife Maria, and their son Larry D. Terry III live in Forney, Texas.
